시놉시스 Synopsis
<보이지 않는>은 브래드포드 2025 영국 문화도시 기념행사의 일환으로, 요크셔 기반으로 활동하는 창작 자선단체 어센던스(Ascendance)가 브래드포드 출신 연출자 피슈다드 모다레시(Pishdaad Modaressi)와 협업으로 제작한 다큐멘터리다. 파킨슨병을 비롯한 신경계 질환을 안고 브래드포드에서 살아가는 사람들의 특별한 여정을 담았다. 영화는 춤과 움직임으로 이들을 창작 예술가로 주체화하며, 질환을 넘어 자신의 몸과 삶을 표현하는 새로운 가능성을 펼쳐 보인다.
"Unseen" is a documentary film created by Ascendance, a Yorkshire-based creative charity, in collaboration with Bradford filmmaker Pishdaad Modaressi as part of Bradford 2025's City of Culture celebrations. The film captures the extraordinary journeys of people living with Parkinson's and other neurological disorders in Bradford, empowering them as creative artists through dance and movement.

영국 브래드포드에는 파킨슨병을 포함한 여러 신경계 질환을 앓고 있는 이들이 모이는 워크숍이 진행되고 있다. 환자들은 둥글게 둘러앉아 부채를 이용한 무용을 배우는 등 서로의 움직임을 나누고 바라본다. 움직임이라는 인간의 생애 조건에 가해지는 신체적 제약, 이 제약에 대응하려는 이들과 그 협력자들의 모습이 다큐멘터리 속에서 어우러진다. 질병이라는 문제에 학구적으로 집중하기보단 이웃들의 일상이라는 현실에 집중한다. 지역의 건강한 문화적 일면에 관해 비추는 일반적 다큐멘터리로 지나칠 수도 있지만, 출연자들의 상황이나 감정을 극적으로 각색하기보다 덤덤하게 기록하는 영화의 체온이 미덥다. 마지막에 삽입된 실제 무대의 기록 영상 역시 과잉되게 그려지지 않는다. 그럼에도 충분히 완성도 있는 클라이맥스 시퀀스로 감상하게 된다.

In Bradford, UK, workshops bring together people living with Parkinson’s disease and various other neurological disorders. Sitting in a circle, participants share and observe one another’s movements, learning activities such as fan dancing. The documentary brings together the physical limitations imposed on movement—a fundamental condition of human life—with the efforts of those responding to these constraints and the collaborators who support them. Rather than taking a clinical or academic approach to illness, the film focuses on the everyday realities of people in the community. It could easily pass as a conventional documentary highlighting a positive aspect of local culture, but the film earns our trust through its restrained tone, calmly documenting the participants’ circumstances and emotions without dramatizing them. Even the footage of the actual stage performance inserted at the end is not overstated. And yet, it unfolds as a fully realized climactic sequence.
