시놉시스 Synopsis

가브리엘은 인기 무술인 '티클터치(Tickletouch, 간지럼 무술)'에 남다른 재능을 가졌지만, 간지럼을 전혀 타지 않는 거리의 불량배에게 강도를 당한 뒤 무술 지침서에 대한 굳건했던 믿음이 흔들리기 시작합니다. 그는 도대체 무엇이 잘못된 것인지 알아내기 위해 매일 밤 불량배들과 싸움을 벌이고, 마침내 자신조차 더 이상 간지럼을 타지 않게 되었다는 충격적인 사실을 깨닫습니다. 이후 가브리엘은 지침서에 적힌 악평이 사실이길 내심 바라며 티클터치의 라이벌 스포츠인 '실전 구름 관찰(competitive cloud watching)' 경기에 참가해 보지만, 그 스포츠는 예상과 달리 전혀 나쁘지 않았습니다. 결국 티클터치에 깊은 환멸을 느낀 가브리엘은 대회 결승전에서 거들먹거리는 상대를 (간지럼 대신) 완전히 때려눕히고 맙니다. 


Gabriel is talented at the popular martial art tickletouch, but his faith in the tickletouch handbook falters when he gets mugged by a street thug who isn’t ticklish. He fights thugs each night to try discover what’s going wrong until he finds that he isn’t ticklish himself anymore. He plays a match of competitive cloud watching, tickletouch’s rival sport, hoping it will be as bad as the handbook claims, but it isn’t. He becomes disillusioned with tickletouch and, in the finals of a competition, knocks out his smug opponent.

청년 가브리엘은 유망한 ‘티클터치’ 선수다. 티클터치는 서로 간지럼을 태워 먼저 상대를 웃기게 하는 자가 이기는 무술이다. 가브리엘은 티클터치의 창시자로부터 내려왔다는 지침서를 신봉하면서 정진에 힘쓴다. 그런데 어느 날 그 믿음에 균열이 생긴다. 일련의 싸움을 거치면서 사실은 처음부터 간지럼을 잘 타지 않는 사람도 있음을 깨달아 버린 것이다. 승패의 기준점, 삶의 지향점이 완전히 무너진 뒤 가브리엘은 지침서의 맹약을 어기기에 이른다. 제시 아이젠버그의 이미지가 떠오르는 너드 백인 청년의 고군분투가 중심인 작품이며, 전반적으로 코믹한 톤 앤드 매너가 분위기를 이끈다. 가벼운 잽을 계속하여 날리다가 마지막에 묵직한 어퍼컷 한 방을 내지르니, 잠시 힘을 빼고 그곳까지의 경쾌한 리듬에 빠져보길 바란다.

Young Gabriel is a promising competitor in ‘Tickletouch.’ Tickletouch is a martial art where the first to make their opponent laugh through tickling claims victory. Gabriel devotes himself to his training, blindly trusting the handbook passed down from the creator of the sport. However, one day, a crack forms in his unwavering faith. Through a series of altercations, he comes to the crushing realization that some people are simply not ticklish from the very beginning. With his standards for victory and defeat—and the very compass of his life—completely shattered, Gabriel ultimately breaks the sacred vows of the handbook. The film centers on the struggles of a nerdy young white man reminiscent of Jesse Eisenberg, driven by an overall comedic tone and manner. Continuously throwing light jabs before landing a heavy uppercut at the very end, the film invites you to simply relax and lose yourself in its lighthearted rhythm all the way to the finish line.
