시놉시스 Synopsis

13살 소년 사이드는 라바트의 오래된 메디나에서 살아간다. 여름이면 빈 맥주병을 모아 가게에 팔며 용돈을 번다. 그 돈으로는 몰래 숨겨두고 보살피는 개에게 먹이를 사주려 한다. 어느 날, 가장 친한 친구가 사이드에게 그런 일을 하는 것은 ‘하람(haram)’, 즉 이슬람 율법에 어긋나는 일이라고 말한다.

Said, a 13-year-old boy, lives in the old Medina of Rabat. In the summer he has a side job, collecting empty beer bottles and selling them to a shop. With the money, he wants to buy food for a dog he is hiding. One time, his closest friend tells him that it is ‘haram’ to do that.

한 소년이 눈물을 감추며 등을 돌린다. 우리는 그것을 성장이라 부를 수 있을까. 아름다운 햇볕이 드리우는 너른 해변, 그곳으로 밀려드는 파도는 어딘가 거세다. 부모님 몰래 옥상에서 개를 돌보는 소년은 사료 값을 마련하기 위해 바닷가에 버려진 빈 병을 줍는다. 선원인 아버지가 바다에는 얼씬도 말라고 했지만, 소년에게 빈 술병은 자신의 힘으로 개를 돌볼 수 있는 방편이 된다. 그러나 친구에게 그것은 종교적 금기를 먼저 떠올리게 하는 위험한 물건이다. 텔레비전에서는 통속극 사이로 전쟁 뉴스가 흘러나오고, 배를 타는 아버지는 불쑥 부재하거나 명령하는 존재로 등장한다. 카메라는 금기와 권위가 몇 겹으로 둘러싼 소년의 세계를 따라간다. 그 안에서 돌봄은 순수한 선의라기보다 불안한 애씀에 가깝고, 소년의 노력은 절박해서 더욱 생생하다.

A boy turns away, hiding his tears. Can we truly call this coming of age? Beneath the beautiful sunlight stretching across a wide beach, the waves rolling ashore seem somehow fierce. Secretly raising a dog on the rooftop, the boy collects empty bottles abandoned along the shore to buy dog food. Though his seafaring father has forbidden him from going anywhere near the sea, the bottles become a way for him to care for the dog through his own efforts. To his friend, however, they are dangerous objects that immediately evoke a religious taboo. On television, news of war flows between melodramas, while his father, away at sea, appears either as an abrupt absence or a commanding presence. The camera follows a boy’s world hemmed in by layers of taboo and authority. Within it, caregiving is less an act of pure goodwill than an anxious struggle, and the boy’s efforts are all the more vivid for their desperation.
