시놉시스 Synopsis

<분둥안(bendungan)>은 안무적 몸짓과 진솔한 인터뷰를 엮어내어 바다, 강, 그리고 인간의 신체와 같은 '수역(water bodies)'의 사회·공간적 역사를 탐구합니다. 댐이나 강둑, 또는 제방을 뜻하는 인도네시아어에서 제목을 따온 이 작품은 물의 기억을 고찰하며, 말레이 제도(누산타라) 전역에 걸친 네덜란드의 식민지화 프로젝트에서 물이 수행한 역할을 조명합니다. 과연 이러한 물의 공간들은 무엇을 알고, 기억하며, 또 전하는 것일까요? 영화는 인도네시아와 네덜란드의 물가에 기대어 살아가는 세 사람의 삶의 궤적을 따라갑니다. 


bendungan blends choreographed gestures with intimate interviews to explore the socio-spatial histories of water bodies — seas, rivers, and the human body. Taking its title from an Indonesian word which can refer to a dam, river bank or sea bank, bendungan investigates the memory of water and its role in the Dutch colonial project across the Malay Archipelago, the Nusantara. What do such water bodies know, remember and transmit? The film follows three people who live close to these water bodies in Indonesia and the Netherlands.

‘분둥안(bendungan)’은 ‘댐(방제)’을 뜻하는 인도네시아어다. 영화의 화자(들)는 자신과 가족이 마주해왔던 강과 댐의 이야기로 인도네시아의 역사를 톺는다. 20세기 중반, 인도네시아가 네덜란드의 식민주의에 지배됐던 때에 자신의 아버지가 네덜란드의 시민이자 군인이 되었던 사연과 그것을 이해하려는 후대의 목소리 등이 이어지는 것이다. 카메라는 화자의 이야기에 맞추어 각지의 풍광을 직관적으로 보여준다. 강을 이야기할 때는 강이, 바다를 이야기할 때는 바다가, 어떠한 이국의 기억을 되새길 땐 그곳에 있는 사람을 비춘다. 세계의 장소와 개인의 삶, 개인의 삶과 세계의 기억이 거대한 프랙탈 구조처럼 이어져 있음을 상기시킨다. 식민 제국주의의 피해를 경험했던 20세기 아시아의 집단 기억은 21세기에 반드시 환기해야 할 우리의 주제일 것이다.

Bendungan is an Indonesian word meaning ‘dam’ (or ‘embankment’). The narrator(s) of the film retrace the history of Indonesia through the stories of rivers and dams that they and their families have encountered. The film weaves together the story of a father who became a Dutch citizen and soldier in the mid-20th century under Dutch colonial rule, alongside the voices of the succeeding generation striving to understand that past. In rhythm with the narrators' tales, the camera intuitively reveals the landscapes of various regions. It shows rivers when speaking of rivers, the sea when speaking of the sea, and the people residing there when reminiscing about memories of a foreign land. The film serves as a profound reminder that the places of the world and individual lives—and personal lives and the memories of the world—are interconnected like a colossal fractal structure. The collective memory of 20th-century Asia, which suffered the deep wounds of colonial imperialism, is undoubtedly a crucial theme that we must continue to evoke and reflect upon in the 21st century.
