시놉시스 Synopsis
제2차 세계대전이 한창이던 시기, 다트무어(Dartmoor)로 피난을 온 12살 소년 토비. 새로운 두려움이 그를 옥죄어 오는 가운데, 토비는 할머니 줄리의 어두운 과거와 황무지를 배회하는 미스터리한 존재를 마주하게 된다.
Toby is a twelve-year-old boy who is evacuated to Dartmoor in the midst of the Second World War. With new fears looming over him, Toby discovers his grandmother Julie’s dark past and a mysterious figure who wanders the moorland.

전쟁터에 나간 아버지를 기다리는 아이는 망원경으로 먼 곳을 내다본다. 또 다른 전쟁에서 남편을 잃은 할머니 역시 상실 이후의 시간 속에 멈춰 선 채 바깥을 바라본다. 두 사람의 응시에는 사랑하는 이가 돌아오길 바라는 마음과 불확실한 현재를 살아가는 불안이 담겨 있다. 식량을 구하러 나간 길에서 아이는 당나귀 한 마리 앞에 멈춰 서고 두려움 때문에 더 나아가지 못한다. 그 무렵 인적 드문 황야에는 ‘웅덩이 사나이’라 불리는 낯선 존재가 배회한다. 비와 바람, 어둠과 안개 속에서 불현듯 나타나는 그는 마치 오래된 의식을 수행하듯 물웅덩이를 짊어지고 걷는다. 그의 존재는 공포와 불안을 불러일으키지만 동시에 아이의 호기심을 자극한다. 영화는 전쟁의 상실 속에서 자라는 한 아이의 성장담을 현실과 환상의 경계를 흐리는 민담적 상상력으로 풀어낸다.

A child waiting for a father who has gone to war peers into the distance through a telescope. A grandmother who lost her husband in another war likewise gazes outward, frozen in the time since her loss. Their stares hold both the longing for a loved one’s return and the anxiety of living through an uncertain present. While searching for food, the child stops before a donkey, too frightened to go on. Meanwhile, a mysterious figure known as the “Puddle Man” roams the desolate wilderness. Appearing suddenly amid rain, wind, darkness, and fog, he walks with a puddle on his back as if performing an ancient ritual. His presence evokes fear and unease, yet also stirs the child’s curiosity. The film tells the coming-of-age story of a child growing up amid the losses of war through a folkloric imagination that blurs the boundaries between reality and fantasy.
