시놉시스 Synopsis

1991년 이집트 홍해에서 발생했던 여객선 ‘살렘 익스프레스’의 침몰 사건에 기반한 극 영화다. 최소 500여 명의 사망자를 만들었던 이 비극에 대해 지금을 사는 우리가 어떠한 영향을 받고 있는지, 그 영향의 고리를 어떻게 매듭지어야 하는지를 제언한다. 타지에서 일하느라 집에 잘 오지 못하는 아버지 칼레드는 아내의 죽음마저 곁에서 지키질 못했다. 자신을 비난하거나 혹은 그리워하는 딸들과 대화하던 그는, 집에서 한 카세트테이프를 발견하고 부모 세대가 겪었던 비슷한 이별의 이야기를 발굴해 낸다. ‘살렘 익스프레스’ 사건과 연관된 이 가족적 비극의 기저에 닿기 위해 칼레드는 심해로 잠수한다. 10분의 짧은 러닝타임이지만, 효율적인 교차 편집을 통해 서사의 연속성과 드라마의 묵직함을 적절히 구현한 단편이다.

This fiction film is based on the tragic sinking of the passenger ferry Salem Express in the Egyptian Red Sea in 1991. It asks how this tragedy—which claimed the lives of at least 500 people—continues to affect those of us living today, and how we might bring its chain of consequences to a close. Khaled, a father whose work far from home kept him away, was not there when his wife died. As he speaks with his daughters, who either blame him or miss him, he discovers a cassette tape at home and uncovers a similar story of separation from his parents’ generation. To reach the roots of this familial tragedy intertwined with the Salem Express disaster, Khaled dives into the deep sea. Despite its brief 10-minute runtime, the short effectively conveys both narrative continuity and dramatic weight through efficient cross-cutting.
