Why does imoni captivate the people of Yamagata? How has imoni, a culinary tradition representative of Yamagata, become ingrained in the lives of its citizens? While exploring its roots, the film discovers that imoni is also enjoyed in towns far away.

야마가타의 가을이면 사람들은 강변과 공원에 모여 함께 냄비를 끓이고 음식을 나눈다. <이모니 로드 무비>는 일본 야마가타 지역의 전통 음식인 ‘이모니’를 통해, 공동체의 감각과 일상의 온기를 담아낸다. 특별한 사건이나 극적인 갈등 대신, 재료를 손질하고 국물을 끓이며 서로의 안부를 묻는 느린 시간을 따라가며 영화는 켜켜히 쌓인 삶의 시간을 잠시나마 공유하게 만든다. 누군가는 고기에 술을 붓는 법을 알려주고, 누군가는 간을 맞추며 웃음을 건넨다. 함께 요리하고 이모니를 나누는 과정 속에서 세대를 거쳐 이어진 생활의 지혜와 관계의 감각이 자연스럽게 드러난다. 영화는 개인의 초상에 머무르지 않고, 지역축제로 이어지는 거대한 이모니카이의 풍경까지 담아낸다. 강변에 길게 늘어선 사람들, 커다란 냄비를 둘러싼 사람들의 모습은 ‘함께 먹는다’는 행위가 단순한 식사가 아니라 지역의 기억과 유대를 확인하는 의식에 가깝다는 사실을 보여준다. <이모니 로드 무비>는 화려한 관광 이미지 대신 음식이 만들어내는 관계의 온도와 공동체의 숨결을 담담하게 기록한다. 냄비에서 피어오르는 김과 사람들의 웃음소리 사이에서 영화는 우리에게 묻는다. 함께 음식을 나눠 먹는다는 것은 무엇인가

When autumn arrives in Yamagata, people gather along riverbanks and in parks to cook in large pots and share food. Imoni Road Movie captures the sense of community and the warmth of everyday life through imoni, a traditional dish from the region. Rather than relying on dramatic events or conflicts, the film follows the unhurried rhythm of preparing ingredients, simmering broth, and checking in on one another, allowing us to briefly share in the layers of time accumulated through everyday life. Someone teaches another how to pour sake over the meat, while someone else adjusts the seasoning and shares a laugh. Through cooking and sharing imoni, the wisdom of daily life and the sense of connection passed down through generations naturally emerge. The film moves beyond individual portraits to capture the expansive scenes of Imonikai, now a major local festival. People lining the riverbanks and gathering around enormous pots reveal that “eating together” is more than a meal: it is a ritual through which a community reaffirms its shared memories and bonds.
