시놉시스 Synopsis

영화를 공부하러 프랑스 파리로 유학을 떠나게 된 감독 지망생 유 단. 출국을 앞두고 단은 푸념을 늘어놓던 엄마가 죽는 꿈을 꾼다. 엄마를 두고 떠나는 것에 대한 죄책감을 친구들에게 털어놓지만, 정작 엄마를 마주하면 답답하기만 하다. 그러던 어느 날, 엄마의 등골이 빠졌다. 바닥을 기어다니는 엄마를 위해 단은 사라진 등골을 찾아야만 한다.

Yu Dan, an aspiring filmmaker, is preparing to leave for Paris, France, to study film. Just before her departure, she has a dream in which her nagging mother dies. She confesses to her friends the deep guilt she feels about leaving her mother behind, yet whenever they actually face each other, Dan feels nothing but suffocating frustration.Then one day, her mother's spine literally falls out. With her mother now reduced to crawling on the floor, Dan must set out to find the missing spine

'등골이 빠진다’는 관용 표현을 모티프로 한 <몽중몽>은 인상적인 이미지와 강렬한 색감, 인물들의 호연으로 보는 즐거움을 준다. 단(권잎새)은 자식 뒷바라지로 고단한 엄마(차미경)에게 고맙지만, 동시에 엄마를 떠나고 싶다. 그 희생을 알기에 죄책감을 느끼고, 그 무게가 자신의 발목을 붙잡는 것 같다. 사랑과 원망, 공존하기 어려워 보이는 감정은 가족이라는 이름 아래 복잡하게 얽혀있다. 권현지는 이 보편적인 감정에 초현실적인 이미지와 묘사를 덧입혀 <몽중몽>의 판타지로 체현한다. 익히 알려진대로 등골은 부모와 자식 간에 놓인 희생과 부채의 무게를 가시화하는 존재이고, 현실과 환상을 오가는 개성적이고 기묘한 이미지들은 인물의 내면을 매혹적으로 형상화한다.

Based on the familiar Korean expression “to have one’s backbone broken”—meaning to work oneself to the bone for someone else—Dream within a Dream is a visually striking film, offering the pleasure of striking images, vivid colors, and strong performances. Dan (Kwon Ip-sae) is grateful to her exhausted mother (Cha Mi-kyeong), who has devoted herself to raising and supporting her child, yet she also longs to leave her. She feels guilty because she knows the extent of her mother’s sacrifice, even as its weight seems to hold her back. Love and resentment—emotions that seem impossible to coexist—are intricately entangled beneath the name of family. Director Kwon Hyun-ji embodies these universal feelings in the fantasy of Dream within a Dream, layering them with surreal images and descriptions. As is widely known, the backbone in the expression makes visible the weight of sacrifice and indebtedness between parent and child, while the film’s distinctive, uncanny images—moving between reality and fantasy—render the characters’ inner lives with mesmerizing force.
