시놉시스 Synopsis
"시간의 흐름은 어떤 사건으로 인해 구분될 때, 비로소 의미있게 기억된다." 촬영팀은 자이 시립 미술관의 의뢰를 받아 70년 전 팡칭미안(方慶綿)이 사진을 찍었던 위산(玉山)을 다시 찾았다. 그곳으로 가는 길에 그들은 기준이 될 만한 시점을 찾는 일 외에도 다양한 등산객, 풍경, 그리고 산악인을 만났다.
“It is only when the passage of time is punctuated by an event that it takes on meaning, that it can be memorized.” The filming team went to Yushan by commission of Chiayi Art Museum, revisiting the place where Fang Ching-Mian took his photos 70 years ago. On the way to the mountain, in addition to finding a reference perspective, they also encountered various climbers, scenery and mountain porters.

이 작품은 2021년 3월부터 8월까지 자이미술관에서 열린 전시 [풍경 촬영사 - 팡칭미안의 사진과 귀환]의 연구와 준비 과정을 기록한 다큐멘터리이다. 연출 랴오 슈후이(LIAO Hsiu-hui), 프로듀서 톈중위안(TIEN Zong-yuan), 촬영 소여헨(SO Yo-hen)은 Your Bros. Filmmaking Group에서 유지했던 협업을 기반으로 이 작품을 제작한다. 아마추어 산악 사진작가이자 대만 최고봉 위산의 원주민 팡칭미안의 기억과 사진은 수천의 오르내림과 함께 산의 가려진 층위와 어긋나듯 포개어진다. 팡칭미안이 촬영한 위산의 위치를 비선형의 불투명함으로 풀어내는 이 작품은 단순한 전시 아카이브 비디오를 넘어 하나의 고유한 시선을 만들어낸다. 팡칭미안의 촬영 여정을 뒤따르던 촬영팀에 포착된 순간은 셀룰로이드의 공백 위에 풍경을 채울 때 이어지는 침묵뿐이다. 암실로 돌아와 오래전 팡칭미안이 촬영하고 보관해둔 유리 원판필름을 꺼내어 사라진 풍경을 불러낼 때야 비로소 이 여정을 휘감았던 정서가 경외감이었다는 사실을 알게 된다.

This documentary records the research and preparation process for the exhibition Man Who Captured the Landscape - Photography and Revisit of Fang Ching-Mian, held at the Chiayi Art Museum from March to August 2021. Directed by Liao Hsiu-hui, produced by Tien Zong-yuan, and filmed by So Yo-hen, the work is the result of continued collaboration within the Your Bros. Filmmaking Group. An amateur mountaineering photographer and an Indigenous resident of Taiwan’s highest peak, Yushan, Fang Ching-mian’s memories and photographs unfold through thousands of ascents and descents—layered and misaligned like the veiled strata of the mountain itself. By interpreting Fang’s images of Yushan through a nonlinear and opaque lens, the film transcends the conventions of an exhibition archive video, forming a distinct and autonomous gaze. The moments captured by the film crew as they follow Fang’s path are marked only by silence, as they attempt to fill the blank celluloid with landscape. It is only back in the darkroom—when the old glass plate negatives shot and preserved by Fang long ago are retrieved and developed—that one realizes the prevailing emotion throughout this journey was, in fact, awe.
